Technology innovation has focused on providing & storing data on real time basis and ensuring security in terms of any data breach.
Is it possible for India to store data of 1.3 billion people?
If data is stored can it be accessed readily on real time?
Does there exists technology to do such a humungous task?
Questions are many but solution is one, Blockchain technology, it is secure, safe, real time, transparent and many more features.
For example, a person, met an accident was rushed to the hospital and the doctor wanted to operate him due to accidental complications but was unaware of any previous healthcare issues the person was facing also, during treatment the patient had to be given medicines which were very costly. To get the medical claim for the patient and also to be sure about his health conditions, real time data is required which can be basically provided by blockchain technology. Starting from the medicines manufacturing location, date and time stamp and the person handling the drug, person consuming the drugs, complete supply chain data can be accessed by blockchain technology.
India aims that by 2030 it will adopt Universal Healthcare (UHC) which is the goal of United Nations’ Sustainable Development program. For any kind of sustainable development in India, digital solution has to be implemented in every segment of healthcare system which can ease the accessibility of patient data, reduce insurance frauds, prevent the drug piracy and introduce methods for impeccable accountability in the system. National Health Protection Scheme offered by Ayushman Bharat Yojana that aims to adopt universal healthcare system by 2030 would face certain challenges:
- Funding allocation
- Service delivery
- Patient selection
- Sustainability
Leveraging digital technology in simplifying task would increase the success rate. Blockchain would help the complete process by offering multiple functions that would help India to achieve UHC.
Blockchain comes with some unique benefits:
- Improving the quality of health data store
- Reduction in the administrative efforts to handle patient data
- Universal access to health data
- The continuous surveillance and digital auditing though Blockchain would make private/public healthcare providers, drug manufacturers, and insurance companies impeccably accountable for their actions.
The objective of implementing blockchain technology on Indian healthcare system is ambitious, challenging but achievable.
